The Liberty Paint Story.

Liberty Paint was founded in 1986 by Michael Black and Carl Black in Hudson, NY. Friends since the late 1960s, Michael and Carl shared a love of architecture and the fine arts, antiques and design, old houses and the luminescent rural landscape of the Hudson Valley. Michael, a specialist in historic preservation, found quality paint difficult to come by and learned through experience that cheaper paint is expensive in the long run. “You pay for it many times over,” he says.

Initially a Bruning Paint dealer, Liberty Paint began in 1990 to manufacture unique product lines, such as Moonstone interior and Empress of China exterior, using the highest quality pigments and resins. Liberty Paint became known around Columbia County and the Berkshires for its durability, its extraordinary colors, and its ease of application. Inside or outside, Liberty Paint and color designs make a difference that can be felt as well as seen.

Carl, influenced by midcentury modernists like the architect Paul Rudolph and textile artist Jack Lenor Larsen, offers bespoke color designs for homes and businesses while Michael handles manufacturing. Together they have developed an unparalleled expertise in both palette and product.

In the early 2000’s, Liberty closed its iconic Hudson retail store at 969 Columbia Street, known for a small Statue of Liberty replica on the front lawn. (The building is now a residence.) Operations moved to Athens, NY and Liberty Paint today remains synonymous with hand-manufactured quality and the highest level of customer service. Liberty Paint adorns walls from Maine to Houston, New Jersey to California.
